Abstract
We react emotionally to fiction. Yet, we know that fictional characters and situations have no real existence. To solve the paradox, various explanations have been put forward. After having discussed them in turn, we shall show that the one which claims that we are really moved by fiction but pre-rationally, i.e. before having separated fiction from reality, is the most plausible one.
