Abstract
John Steinbeck, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1962, depicts rural societies facing natural hazards in several novels published in the 1930s. Wind and Drought in the Great Plains was a recurring topic at the time of the dustbowl. Their spatial analysis allows us to study how Steinbeck reflects on the failure of human relationships with nature. By exploring social, religious as well as political ways in his books, he delivers a complex message in order to champion a better lifestyle.
