Abstract
The biopic focuses on historical figures. The African-American filmmaker Dee Rees gives an unconventional narrative of blues singer Bessie Smith with Bessie (2015), thereby offering the depiction of a singer unafraid to publicly oppose the hegemonic system then in place, and at the same time pressing for a rewriting of the genre.
